Half speakeasy and half fitness mecca, Performix House is, for lack of a better description, something that has to be experienced to be understood. With miles of black squat racks, shiny new bars and plates, machines you’ve probably only seen in the Russian training montage of Rocky IV, and sweaty people in such immaculate physical shape, you could have sworn they were holograms. We’ve had this experience a few times, and each time there is one clear outlier, Andy Speer. Once we watched as he patiently walked one of his older clients through a complex movement ensuring proper form, securing the perfect weight and gently reinforcing the reasoning behind the movement. Another time we walked in and Andy was on his hands and knees bolting together a squat rack while younger trainers flexed for their Instagram. In the world of fitness, awash with ego, #ads, and self-promotion, Andy is the exception. But that’s not what makes him exceptional.
Building a foundation of strength and discipline that would last him a lifetime, Andy started his career young as a successful gymnast. Gymnastics rings are not a bike and that stuff definitely doesn’t just “come back to you” but watching Andy now, it’s clear he hasn’t slipped at all. Seamless transitioning from a dead-hang to a muscle-up, he floats up and down between moves. If it wasn’t such an impressive feat of sheer strength, especially for his muscle-laden 6’1” frame, it would be almost…beautiful. Raised in a family where hard work is not just an expectation but a foregone conclusion, Andy learned confidence through consistency and when gymnastics was over, he looked to transfer his skills to track and field where he excelled in the pole vault. This carried him to college where he vaulted for the University of Miami and where for the first time, fell in love with training. From there he’d go on to work with the best in the industry, becoming a lifelong student of fitness and learning how to motivate others to achieve their best. For Andy, fitness is his personal passion but what he lives for and trains for is sparking that same passion in others.
